About Wondai
The Wakka Wakka word for Dingo, Wondai is known for its proud timber history, impressive art gallery and quaint country pubs all bursting with history and character. The South Burnett Region Timber Industry Museum is well worth a visit for its impressive timber structure and bullocky team sculpture alone. The museum is a testament to the timber industry, which played a major role in the early settlement of the region and its development. The building also features the Wondai Visitor Information Centre with a gift shop stocking locally produced timber items created by South Burnett artisans.
The Wondai Heritage Museum also offers an insight into the district’s history, with artefacts and memorabilia spanning over 120 years. After your history lesson is complete, head to one of Wondai’s friendly pubs or the Diggers Club for a cold beer and a delicious counter meal.
The Wondai Regional Art Gallery is housed in the original Wondai Station Master’s House and is the pride of the town. Locally run by a dedicated team of volunteers, the gallery features a range of artists from across the South Burnett and beyond with a new exhibition opened on the first Friday of each month, except January.
The Wondai Sports Ground and Lions Pavilion are situated on the Bunya Highway, on the northern outskirts of town. Enjoy the diversity of the Wondai region while you are here and visit some of the other splendid attractions.
